Guest blogging for SEO gets the boot

Guest blogging for links and pay is big money business – illegitimate business.  Matt Cutts heads Google’s spam team and gives those using guest blogging for SEO purposes a boot in the butt. He approved 423 comments in response and the majority are from whiny protesters and nit-pickers who didn’t like his reality check.

Matt includes videos and links to trace the decline of guest articles. He also advises bloggers not to recommend guest posting, guest blogging sites, or guest blogging SEO as a linkbuilding strategy.

Please note that as I have been barraged by requests for publishing guest posts from those who believe they can use my blog as a platform for promoting their SEO businesses, I am not accepting any guest posts at this time from anyone I do not have a relationship with.

In mid-October in my personal blog I blogged about receiving Unsolicited Requests of All Kinds, including guest post propositions and Advertising and affiliate marketing propositions.


I suppose that some beginner bloggers may be flattered by the receipt of propositions like the ones referred to above but I’m not a beginner and I’m not an SEO game player. I am into natural linking patterns and that means I don’t participate in all unnatural linking schemes like awards memes, blog hops, linky parties, giveaways and/or anything else that smacks of SEO game playing to get backlinks and aimed at unnaturally inflating traffic and pagerank.

I have always made that clear in guest blogging policies on both blogs and I re-stated my position again my article. However, I still receive several of these propositions for both blogs every day.

Greed is a powerful motivator and my observation reveals competition for traffic, links and/or money is more likely to bring out the worst character traits in game playing bloggers than their best traits. How many of these scammy and spammy propositions are you receiving?

    Before I fall foul of the Google gauieters I would like to ask how to go about publishing articles that are well written and are written by experts in their field. I run a general foodies website and have requested and received permission from a well respected blogger to reproduce some of her articles about Wine which are relevant to my intended audience profile and catchment area. Is Google likely to block us or would they accept text at the end of each article that is reproduced covering permission requested and given, link to author’s website etc. Does Google have the skill to determine if the article is a generous offer or a spammy attempt ?
    Also, I have read various comments about the use of ‘nofollow’. How does one ensure the correct settings for ‘nofollow’ on a site where SEO is automated as part of the deal ?

    • Peter,
      I do not consider Google to be the enemy and it peeves me that so many bloggers do. It’s makes no sense at all to be negatively focused towards Google. It makes lots of sense to put yourself in their shoes and tune into what they are aimed to do.

      Search engines aim to deliver the most authoritative, relevant and fresh content on any subject we use key word search to locate. Those who deliberately create duplicate content across domains are corrupting the search results in an attempt to game search engine results for their own benefit ie. they are the enemy!

      Does Google have the skill to determine if the article is a generous offer or a spammy attempt ?

      Google’s algorithms can detect duplicate content and can pinpoint which article is the original, and which articles are self serving duplicates that the authors of are filling other blogs/splogs with so they can get backlinks to their sites from them.

      Understand that I am into research and writing. Searching and tracking search results only to find the same article has been duplicated across domains is a colossal waste of my time. I’m delighted that Google’s algorithm now detects duplicate content. I’m happy that the result of being a lazy and unimaginative blogger who deliberately duplicates content across domains is that the duplicate(s) may get tossed into the supplementary index where the sun don’t shine – hooray! The original article republished in full with the author’s permission in duplicates loses positioning in the SERPS sliding downwards in the results – hooray! And the sites filled with their deliberately duplicated content achieve no pageranks or are banned for splogging – alleluia!

      The worst possible choice is republishing duplicate content. Those who read on any specific topic are usually already aware of the leading articles in their niche and will not be happy to read the same article on another site. That kind of duplication points the finger at the guest blogger for being an SEO gamer and at the second blogger for being lazy, unimaginative, and for colluding in SEO gaming.

      Adding insult to injury occurs when the author of the original content not only allows publication of duplicate content across domains but has the audacity to publish an new post one their own site inviting their readers to read the duplicate on another site! I unfollow every blogger who does that.

      Better approaches:

      From my guest posts policy:
      The submission must be original, new and unique, of reasonable length, and those including images and/or media must meet the requirements below:

      Original – The blogger submitting a post must be the author of the post submitted.
      New and Unique – Posts containing content previously published in digital or printed form anywhere else before will not be accepted for publication;
      Reasonable length – The minimum length is 200 words and maximum length is 650 words;
      Images Media – Images and media must be royalty free or used in accordance with their license.

      Terms of Agreement

      (1) The guest author and I both agree not to republish the same article in it’s entirety or in part anywhere else either in digital or printed form.

      (2) You publish your own original article introducing the blogger in question, providing a brief bio focused on their experience and/or credentials in the niche. You include a couple of quotes from the article you want to feature, backlink to the article and publish it on your blog.

      (3) The blogger in question writes a brief new article on the same subject or does a brief re-write of the main points in the original article. They include a couple of quotes from the original article and backlink to it and you publish the new guest post on your site.

      TIP: If over 65% of content (1) or (2) are original then the duplicate content issue will not arise and both articles will do much better in the SERPS. Yes, it’s that easy to do things properly.

  2. What about guest-blogging with friends?
    I mean, I have a friend send me an article on the EPL title race, and I sent him an article on the relegation battle.
    In fact, we are planning to co-write an article. He’ll review a match, and I’ll review a match, and then post it on both sites. So that would affect my SEO ranking?
    What about simultaneously posting an article on my site as well as other, very popular sites such a Roar, CaughtOffside, Soccer Lens? I rely on that for link-building, as I think that If the articles are actually good, readers would want to read more of my articles and subsequently visit ,my site. And there is the social presence as well.
    To be honest, I was never a fan of guest-blogging for just anybody with a blog, unless I personally know him/her.

      • What if the posts are changed drastically. I mean pretty much same theme, but different layout, different words, different article.
        Even the title being different.
        I mean, the second instance(guest-post) would be based on the idea, and then edited and modified to make it more personal.
