How to get on the Woopra bandwagon
I’m always on the prowl for blogging tips and blogging tools. Lorelle’s post (see her quote below) caught my attention and an earlier Drupal announcement came to mind as well.
When I checked the site out I was impressed with the live tracking and web statistics capabilities of woopra and I’m sure other wordpress.com bloggers will want to install this system as much as I do.
I, the non-statistics watcher, am fascinated with the ability to look beyond the score card of the numbers and really get a clear picture of who is using my blog and why. I’d love to have this same feature on Lorelle on WordPress, but currently WordPress.com members are unable to add Javascript, thus can’t use Woopra. Download Woopra
Woopra installs onto your computer as a desktop client. The Woopra Installation Guide will provide you with the step-by-step instructions. In summary:
1. Install the latest version of Java from the Java official website.
2. Download and install the appropriate version of Woopra for your computer’s operating system.
3. Install the appropriate Woopra Plugin or use the Manual Installation on your blog or website to activate it for use with Woopra following the Woopra Installation Guide.
4. Start Woopra on your computer and watch your blog’s stats live!
You will want to take note of the tutorial in this post if you are installing woopra on a mac.

Hi Tech,
I have readers from blogging platforms. Also if readers click through to Lorelle’s article they will see her take on the issue. In addition she posted to the wordpres.com forum looking for bloggers there who also wanted to express support for the feature.
I expect my readers to use the links to click through to woopra and get all the details they need. It will be interesting to see how bloggers on other blogging platforms respond as well. Thanks for dropping in.

Hi,
Really helpful post! I’m on Typepad, where the stats are almost non-existent. I also use SiteMeter, but not enough info there either.
This is definitely worth a try, IMO.

No I don’t have any idea on how long it takes to get approved however, there is a forum link so you could ask there http://www.woopra.com/forums/
Please let me know what you think once you have it up and running. I’m interested in it for use on my domain.

I checked out the forum - based on the answers/comments in there - It may be a while. They gather and give - but it seems like it has been days/weeks since approvals… Or I read it wrong. I will let you know.

How is this better than Google Analytics? Has anyone tried both.? I can’t wait to give it a go. It looks cool. We mustn’t confuse Java and JavaScript of course

Yes and I’ll be tracking them down and getting them to “spill their guts”.
I’m really interested in giving it a go on my domain.
I’m signing up today and notice there is an approval delay.
I’m wondering how much of a resource hog it will be.

Thanks, timethief, for the great review. I sure do hope WordPress.com will consider this, but there is a long way to go with development of this analytics program.
I don’t know how long the invites will continue to be available as it is in testing, but it has been taking a few weeks for approval, though they’ve been coming out fast in the past week or so after they switched to new, larger servers. Thousands and thousands of people want to use this, and I don’t know how long they can keep up permitting so many users during the development stage. So stay tuned for info on that, I’m sure.

I’m going to review this again tomorrow. I’ve had that woopra widget for some time and an account but it looked complicated once they gave it to me so I held off doing anything with it.

It took a few weeks for my self-hosted blog to be approved — I applied the day Lorelle wrote about it — then I didn’t have time to install it for another week or so — just today, in fact. I must say, with only a few hours of stats, it’s awfully impressive and I’m not sure yet what to take away from the information.
Much of it duplicates what I find in Sitemeter (the html version available to all WordPress.com bloggers; I never knew we could use it on .com blogs till timethief mentioned it several months ago) but there’s so much there I’ll need time to dig into it. My immediate surprises: I’ve gotten a lot of SE hits through Windows Live. I had no idea! It also shows me which of my categories are clicked on — more than I thought — and perhaps most valuable, how many visitors are new.
I keep logging out because if I let myself, I could just sit here and watch it!

I’ve been using Woopra for two weeks now, alongside Google Analytics. I find it very hard to compare the two because I use them differently. I think Woopra is like a car and Google Analytics is a bus and an airplane.
Woopra: Live! What’s going on right now. Who is online? Where did they come from? What are they doing? And when I say live, I really mean live. There’s no refreshing involved.
Google Analytics: Everything else.
Sure, Woopra is capable of more than just live statistics but Google Analytics is a solid tool. Woopra, I would say, is handy.
