WordPress 2.5: Image upload problems

I wish I had a magic bullet for the image upload problems people are having, but I don’t. What I do have is a few suggestions that have worked for others, but not everyone.

  1. Go to the Adobe website and download and install the latest version of Adobe Flash in your browser. Even if you think you have the latest version, do it anyway. Adobe Flash 9 is on like, r115! [Edit: You can check to see if you are using the latest version of Flash by going here.]
  2. Clear your browser cache, start a post and try the upload. If you get any blank screens, right click on them and select reload to force reload them.
  3. Try a different browser. If you are on Windows and using IE, then try Firefox, or the other way around. If you are on Mac and using Firefox, try using Safari 3.1 (10.4.11 and later). I’ve had good luck so far with Safari.
  4. If you are on Linux, according to staff there is a bug in the Adobe Flash plugin for Linux, and since that is under the control of Adobe, WordPress cannot do anything about it. Hopefully Adobe will get it fixed real soon.

I don’t know if any, or all of these things will help you, but at this time it is all I have to offer you.

    I haven’t posted since this upgrade started… Sure hope I don’t have to jump through all those hoops just to upload a photo!

    But since it has been nearly five months since I switched avatars, and STILL the old one keeps popping up all the time, I don’t hold out much hope.

    Heh, your avatar problem is so strange.

    Everything hopefully will go smoothly for you Ian. Just make sure you have the latest flash, and make sure that you clear your cache. And it could be that by the time you get around to another post or uploading images, staff will have the major kinks ironed out. They’ve been identifying problems and pushing out fixes ever since the upgrade.

    According to WordPress Support on http://wordpress.org/support/topic/164999, if you it’s still not work, especialy if you are on linux desktop (flash bug), you can disable flash uploader by No Flash Uploader plugins (http://trac.wordpress.org/attachment/ticket/6406/no-flash-uploader.php?format=raw)

    I have played with the htacess file, installed the latest Flash and followed all of your instructions to the letter. ‘ STILL i get this error message:
    Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_constrain_dimensions() in /home2/newyorka/public_html/wp-admin/includes/image.php on line 173
    It doesn’t matter which photo I choose or what size it is. No success
    Help!

    @sage,

    What you are going to want to do is search at http://wordpress.org/support/ and I would suggest the following searches:

    1. Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_constrain_dimensions()

    2. undefined function wp_constrain_dimensions()

    3. wp_constrain_dimensions()

    4. wp-admin/includes/image.php on line 173

    5. image.php

    It could very well be that you are going to have to edit and modify the image.php file. There is also the possibility that there has been a fix posted that you can just upload to your public_html/wp-admin/includes/ directory.

    On my shared independent WP blog, my co-blogger cannot even see the Media Upload buttons! They simply are not there. She’s writing everything in code and using Photobucket for now, but that’s hardly satisfactory. She’s running IE7, updated Flash, cleared cache, forced reload, the whole thing. Nothing seems to change.

    Raincoaster, Have your co-blogger try selecting the visual editor, then saving and going to the editor and reloading the page. If it doesn’t show up, repeat this a couple times, switching to the code and saving, then switching to the visual and saving. I had two people who contacted me by my contact form that was able to get it to show up by doing that a couple times.

    IE is iffy, and Firefox less so, but still a bit iffy in spots.

    By the way, is the blog on .com or is it self-hosted? There have been some pretty enterprising users over at the .org forums that have “fixed” some things with minor code hacks and I’m almost thinking this was one of the things posted.

    Im running Leopard on a Mac, image uploader didn’t work for either Firefox or Safari. Installed the no flash uploader plugin stated above, and all seems good.

    I’m glad to hear that. Happy blogging. :)
