Uploading and inserting image with the new WordPress.com

The steps for uploading and inserting images in the new WordPress.com dashboard are different than before, but this tutorial will guide you through it, and once you have done it a few times you will be on your way to happy blogging again. I will include “tips” along the way for any peculiarities I have run into that could trip you up.

Step 1: Open a new post, or the one you want to insert an image or images into. If it is new, give it a title and click save. If you wish to add text in the post now, go ahead and do that. When you are ready to insert the image, click save first, and then place the cursor where you want to insert the image.

TIP! The autosave feature will leave the cursor exactly where it is in the post, but if you click the save button, the cursor will be removed from the text area and you will have to place it back at the image insertion point before proceeding.

Step 2: Click on the “Add an Image” button at the top right of the editor area.

Step 3: Click on the “Choose files to upload” button. [Edit: The "Insert into Post" button in the section below the "Choose files to upload" button is only for inserting images when you have entered the URL of an image.]

Step 4: Navigate to the location of the images you wish to upload and then select the file or files to upload. To select multiple files, ctrl-click (Windows) or cmd-click (Mac) the file names you wish to upload and when done, click the “Select” button (name may vary by Operating System).

TIP! In some instances I have noticed that when selecting multiple files to upload, there is a chance that one of them might show up in the list with the infamous “?” indicating that the file was not uploaded. In this case, you will have to reselect the file that did not upload and upload it again. Note that when you do, a number will be appended to the end of the file name by WordPress. This is to prevent you from accidently overwriting a previously uploaded file. Later, you can go into Manage > Media Library and delete any files that did not upload.

Step 5: Once the files have uploaded, the window will change to show something similar to what you see below. Click “Save all changes” to finish the upload.

TIP! Clicking on the “Save all changes” button when the uploads are finished is an important part and it apparently closes the process and finalizes the database entries. If you do not click the button, sometimes the images are not accessible for insertion into a post or page.

Step 6: Click on the “Media Library” link at the top of the window (above) and the window will change to something similar to what you see below. Click anywhere in the row with the image you wish to insert – or on the “Show” link at right, or on the thumbnail at the left side.

Step 7: Scroll down in the resultant box and you can choose if you want the image linked to the image file in your uploads, or to the post page, or you can enter any URL you wish. The Alignment settings do not affect the actual alignment of the image in the post, but instead pulls in any CSS settings for images that your theme may have. It does not set the alignment of the image within the post. Choose what size image you wish to insert (thumbnail, medium or full size). When you are done with your changes, click on the “Insert into Post” button and you will be taken back to your post or page editor and within a few seconds, the image will show up where you had the cursor.

TIP! I have had a couple instances where when I selected “none” for link URL, WordPress ignored me and put in a link anyway. If that happens, the easiest thing to do is click on the image to highlight it and then click on the “remove link” icon in the toolbar (broken chain link icon).

That is pretty much it. To insert additional images you can click on either the Add an Image, or “Add Media” buttons and then click on the “Media Library” link at the top of the window that comes up, select another image and insert it in the same way (Steps 6 and 7).

My next A future guest post will be on using the Gallery.

[Edit: Some people are experiencing other problems such as errors when trying to upload and this post is not meant to address those errors. Those will have to be addressed by staff.]

  1. Richard! I was about to leave you a THANK GOD! reply and comment after having read through all WordPress’ FAQ and the forums to no avail, but then after following your articulate step-by-step instructions…it STILL didn’t work. I’m sick and disgusted. Why did WordPress change?! When I click “insert into post”, the mini-screen turns white, and nothing happens. I am on a Mac using Firefox and have downsized my jpegs to 72res, 365k. I never had a problem building my whole site (www.kiefferceramics.com), until this change.

    Comment by Kristen Kieffer — April 8, 2008 @ 2:29 pm

  2. Kristen, when the blank white screen comes up, try right clicking on it and selecting “reload” or “refresh” and then try again. It may be that that particular frame, for whatever reason has not loaded. Also, go to http://www.adobe.com/ and download and install the latest version of shockwave flash or your browser. WordPress is very particular on the flash plugin version.

    Comment by Richard — April 8, 2008 @ 2:43 pm

  3. I had the same problem, then I started using Windows live writer to blog and now i can add cool looks to my pictures too. I know that a lot of people are not fond of microsoft or the code windows live writes leaves in the post, but i so far had no problems, i only add tags and categories later by editing the posts or pages in the browser after uploading my post or page from windows live writer. hope that helps

  4. Yes, WLW uses XMLPRC instead of going through the flash uploader, so everything should go smoothly. The other beauty of using an offline editor is that you always have a copy of every post right on your hard drive in case something should happen. I’ve been using an offline editor for nearly a year although right now I’m working with the WordPress editor to see how well it works and if there are any problems. So far, I’ve only found a couple minor issues that would not have any effect on the majority of users.

  5. First, thanks for these instructions. I muddled my way thru an upload today, but I’ll reference your tips next time.

In the meantime - I’m brand-new to blogging and not very tech-savvy, and what I want to know is this:
    1. how can I get some more space between my uploaded photo and the copy? They’re practically touching and it bugs me!
    2. how can I size my photos so that they are the same width as the copy block?

  6. Excellent article, thank you. I was in the midst of uploading pictures to a post when the Dashboard changed and was completely lost. I slept on it and the next day it made sense.

You can insert a picture directly into a post without saving or going to the Media Library and inserting from there. I always select linked to none and then resize the image by dragging the bottom right corner with the cursor. I’ve found that by dragging out to the next to last icon in the post bar, it still retains enough pixels and fits in most PC screens. It’s tiny still on my iMac screen.

Even though WordPress ‘crunches’ the photo files, I use the ‘Data’ photo files in iPhoto because those are already reduced in size. It makes for fast uploading.

    Comment by Brian — April 10, 2008 @ 9:14 am

  7. Brian,

Thanks for the compliment. You can also keep WordPress from sizing images (which it does even when you select “full-sized” in Add an Image) by using the procedure outlined in this post.

  8. I’ve been getting the same “white screen” problem when trying to insert an uploaded video and I click Insert into Post. The video is in the gallery and I can play it there. I’ve tried different PCs, Macs and browsers. I believe it’s a bug. I have the latest shockwave and flash and I’ve followed your pointers above.

I ended up forcing it. I viewed the source on the Gallery page that showed my video to get the coded filename for the video convereted by wordpress, then manually typed in the [wpvideo] string to get my video shown.

I hope they fix the Insert into Post button soon. Would you pass this on to the guys Richard?

  13. I really had a confused time. Thanks for the Tip, it helped a lot. Try these: Write…Pages…Add Media…Browse…Open…Upload. (Now be patient, it takes time to upload) When its finished Media Library should show it in there. Gallery will also note it.

Glad to have helped lessen the confusion for you.

    Comment by Richard — April 19, 2008 @ 8:10 am

  15. Oops instead of ‘Add Media’ I meant Add an Image. I have never tried uploading ‘Media’ but my guess is they’re the same. I have Firefox but i also experienced that ‘white screen’ but never mind. In my experience just be patient while things are uploading as indicated by the ‘busy’ cursor if that white screen is hung. T.Y. again.

    Comment by rltjs — April 21, 2008 @ 10:21 am

  16. @ritjs

Images fall under the “media” umbrella. Right at this moment I expect there is some sort of upgrade activity going on in the back rooms and alleys of WordPress as I’m having image issues where I never have before. It would appear that something they fixed broke something else. I can’t get an image to show up in the editor, and all the image thumbnails in the media library have gone missing. If I preview or publish the post, the images are not there.

  18. @robin, if you have previously been able to upload and insert images, give things a little time to settle down. I just successfully inserted a couple images that I had not been able to insert just a few hours ago.

If that isn’t the case, then I need more details.

    Comment by Richard — April 21, 2008 @ 3:11 pm

  19. Hi Richard,
thanks for this post, but it’s still not helping me. The files I want are already in my Media Library. When I click “add an image” it only gives me the option to upload something from another source, NOT the media library. This is very frustrating for me. The Welcome page of my blog now has no pic on it, and I’ve been struggling with this for 2 days.

Please help if you can. How do I simply pull a pic from the Media Library (already uploaded) and put it on my Welcome page.

    Thanks so much!
    Rita

    Comment by theshadeswriter — April 22, 2008 @ 6:10 am

  20. Rita,

At the top of the “add an image” window that comes up are three links: choose a file, gallery, and media library. Click on the media library link at the top of the window and it will change to show the images already uploaded where you can then select which image you want to insert.

    Comment by Richard — April 22, 2008 @ 8:25 am

  21. Hey Richard,
when I click “add an image,” only one link comes up, and that’s the link to choose a file from the computer or another source. I don’t get the choice of gallery and media library. That’s the problem, it’s not giving me any choices except to upload from my computer or some other source. Should this new and improved version of WordPress be so darned difficult? I’m using the latest IE browser, but even if I wasn’t, I don’t know that I’d want to download the newest. Downloading these new and improved browsers always comes with their own set of problems. All I want is to put a pic that I uploaded several weeks ago onto my welcome page, but it seems to be near impossible to do this.

Oh well…I suppose I shouldn’t be whining to you. But thanks for letting me do it anyway. And thanks for your help.
    Rita

    Comment by Rita — April 22, 2008 @ 2:28 pm

  22. Rita,
I’m talking about right at the very top of the window, righ underneath the black bar with the “X” at the right end of it. See the image above under Step 3 where it has choose file, gallery (0), and “media library” in the light blue section?

IE6 and IE7 can be a problem. There are several areas of the new WordPress that do not like IE and I don’t know how long it is going to take for WordPress to “hack” things to the point where they will work with IE.

Try downloading and using Firefox for working with WordPress. When they get the hacks in place, then you can switch back to IE if you wish, and uninstall Firefox.

  23. I’ve had similar problems today posting images to my blog.
I could not get the jpeg to insert into the blog post from either Safari or Firefox (from an OS X Mac) even though I’ve had no previous problems. The image would show up in the Gallery but then there would be no “insert” button, or I would finally get an insert button and nothing would appear after I clicked on it.

I finally got around it by saving the image from a small jpeg to a png format and got it to post.
It’s obvious that there’s something buggy going on!

    Comment by itinerantactivist — April 24, 2008 @ 12:46 pm

  24. I’m on Mac as well, and I’ve had issues inserting images over the past couple days and I’m in contact with WordPress support, but they are claiming there is nothing wrong. I know there is, and I’m not so sure that it isn’t related to the latest Firefox 2.0.0.14 upgrade since my problems and the upgrade coincided. The other thing I’ve noticed is that at times the flash part of the upload and insert function seems to be really slow.

All I can suggest is to give it a little time and see if it works itself out.

  27. It doesn’t work in IE7

    Comment by rick — April 27, 2008 @ 1:17 pm

  28. Sadly IE and WordPress still aren’t completely on speaking terms. IE is difficult to work with since it doesn’t comply completely with web standards - never has really. There is hope that IE8 will be far more compatible. MS has said that it will be fully compliant but only time will tell. Interestingly I had only a few problems with IE7 in XP while I was doing testing, and have no idea why others have certain issues that I did not. There is a lot of “stuff” between your keyboard and WordPresses servers, and any of that “stuff” can cause issues.

My suggestion is to switch to Firefox for now until WordPress gets things worked out with IE. Once they do, you can switch back to IE if you wish and uninstall Firefox.

    Comment by Richard — April 27, 2008 @ 1:50 pm

  29. Richard -
When I was following step 5, I looked for the button that says “save all changes,” and when I didn’t see it, I realized that I’m only seeing the top portion of the pop-up window. There’s no option to maximize that window in order to see the rest of it, only the “x” in the upper left corner for closing it. There’s also no scrollbar to the right of the pop-up window that would allow me to scroll down to see the lower portions. Any ideas how I can view the rest of that pop-up window so I’ll have the option to “save all changes”? I’m pretty computer illiterate, but if it matters, I’m using Windows Vista and IE7.

  30. Katherine,

For the time being do as I suggested in the comment right above yours and download and install Firefox. IE and WordPress are not getting along well right now at all. After WordPress gets things straightened out with IE, then you can go back to using IE and if you wish uninstall Firefox.

  35. Stuck Like Chuck,

WordPress went all cutting edge with the new flash-based image upload and insertion routine and it is causing issues for some/many out there. Where the exact problem lies is up for debate, but since it seems to effect some and not others means it is more difficult to ferret out. For the time being, I would suggest using the procedure I outlined in this post. It should work for you since it bypasses the place where you are having problems.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you.

  37. I insert a lot of my artwork in my WP blog, but can no longer do it. I get a grayed out screen and it just get stuck. I don’t know how to download Foxfire or IE or any of that stuff. I’m not very technical. I’m very disappointed I can’t use my blog for my artwork anymore. Frankly, I don’t see any of the improvements in WP. I’ve just sat for over an hour trying to insert an image into my blog and reading all these forums. and nothing. Blerghhh! I’m really sad. :-(

  38. Yes, people are still having some problems. WordPress went cutting edge with the flash based uploader, and it sort of backfired on them (and us bloggers of course).

Take a look at this post I did some time ago that may give you a workaround for inserting images that bypasses some of the problem areas with the flash uploader.

    Comment by Richard — May 5, 2008 @ 9:15 pm

  39. Things may have changed, but I’ve found that the classes designed for aligning images don’t work the same as if I manually replace them with align=”left” (for example). Images don’t insert where I left the insertion point, but rather at the very top of my post. Some things don’t work in IE. Other things don’t work in Firefox. Still other things don’t work in Opera.

I LOVE WordPress. But somebody has GOT to get the developers to do better testing before they spring these changes on gazillions of bloggers. And stuff needs to work with IE, or we should be given a list of compatible browsers and versions. No, it really just needs to work with IE–despite how one feels about Microsoft.

  49. For those of you getting the white screen on “Insert into Post”, it appears that there’s an issue with the Media Gallery in Firefox 2.0.0.14. But it doesn’t appear to be that way on *all* of the sites. I have two different blogs running WP 2.5.1 and one is having issues in Firefox inserting images, and one isn’t. What the difference is, I have NO idea, but I’m going to work on trying to figure it out.

    Comment by David Ronnie — June 12, 2008 @ 11:04 pm

  50. Oh, and I should note additionally, that on the blog that WAS having issues uploading in Firefox, I opened up both Camino and Safari and uploaded images absolutely no problem.

    Comment by David Ronnie — June 12, 2008 @ 11:05 pm

  51. Okay…. so I feel like I’m totally spamming your site here, and for that I apologize. Anyway, what I found to fix this appears to be a domain issue, that is, if your domain is configured to be “www.domainname.com” in the “General” tab of your blog’s “Settings”, you will get the blank window media gallery issue if you’re at http://domainname.com, and vice versa. So the best way to fix it (not sure if this will solve everyone’s problems) is to check what your domain/blog urls are set in the WordPress Settings (General tab) and make sure you’re logged in there. A more in-depth explanation here:

I’ve had exactly the same problem and got around it on a few occasions (doesn’t always work) by copying the image address from the image gallery into the url box in the insert image dialog box (the one that pops up when you click the little tree). Like I said it doesn’t work every time, but the flash gallery insert image tool doesn’t work at all. Ever.

  59. I have no problems at all uploading images on this free hosted by wordpress.com blog however, on my wordpress.org install 2.5.1 on my own domain I do not get the option displayed to “browse” and therefore I cannot upload images from my computer to that blog at all. :(

    Comment by timethief — June 14, 2008 @ 5:46 pm

  60. With WordPress.com, there is not telling what they are doing in the background, or when. In one of the blurbs I read somewhere, they claim to make between 5 and 20 changes per day to the code at .com. I’m sure this is part of the reason things may work today, but not later. We do know that some of their “improvements” have backfired as has been shown by some threads on the .com forums where staff has admitted to rolling out a code change that broke something else.

With self-hosted blogs the only time there is a change, is when the blogger upgrades their blog, so in general, things will be more stable (broken or not). That is not to say that things cannot happen due to issues with the wordpress code which will effect the blog later. In my recent experience with the image upload problems (no browse button) or the now infamous “http error” some are getting when trying to upload on self-hosted blogs, there seems to be two things happening.

First, for whatever reason, there are records being inserted into the wordpress “postmeta” database with a post_id of 0 (zero). In some cases, there can end up being hundreds of these which at some point seems to cause the browse button in the image uploader to disappear. This requires a trip directly into the database to delete those entries with post_id 0. This brings back the browse button, but mucking about in your database is always - or should be - a hair raising experience. There is always a chance that you might accidentally mess things up.

In some instances, even though the browse button comes back after deleteing the post_id 0 entries, it may uncover a second problem where you get an http error when you try to upload. This is caused by security setting at your ISP which is preventing wordpress from uploading the image, and requires that the security setting be turned off specifically for - only for - image uploading in the .htaccess file. This really should not have happened, and WordPress deserves a whack on the nose with a rolled up newspaper for this one - actually two whacks, one for each of the above issues.

Both of the above solutions are covered in the wordpress.org support forums, but they apply only to self-hosted installations. Any time that you go into your wordpress database, there is a chance that you could muck things up by accident, especially if you do not have experience doing so.

  62. John,

Since the images were added while it was “local” the links will all point to the “local” location URL’s on the work station.

Sadly what you are going to have to do is to edit each post and correct the URL’s for the images manually. I know no other way to fix this.

  63. Richard,

I tried that but when i do “Save all Changes”, it does not do anything.

in contrast i can edit and saves the changes

    Title*
    Caption
    Description

but it does not save the change for these.

    Link URL
    Alignment
    None Left Center Right
    Size
    Thumbnail Medium Full size

Anythounts what might be the issue here.

    Thanks,
    John

  64. You need to change the URL on the link in the post where the image appears. You go to the image library, get the new URL of the image, then you open the post for edit which is supposed to contain the image, click on the image placeholder, click on the “link” icon in the toolbar, then change the old URL there to the new correct URL and then save the post. The image should then show up.

I had to do the above on my self-hosted blog when I moved from wordpress.com. It’s time consuming, but there is no other way really.

Alternately, you can open the posts one at a time, delete the image placeholder and reinsert them through the media library tab in the “add image” window.

  65. Here is what has work for me for the white screen issue.
Add the Line to your htaccess file.

    AddHandler application/x-httpd-php5 .php.

If forces you to use php5

Not sure why it worked but it did for me.
Please let me know if this helps for anyone else.
